A Boeing Satellite Systems technician is dwarfed by the massive Anik F1 satellite, a 17.5-kW Boeing 702 model spacecraft being built for Telesat Canada. When stowed for launch, Anik F1 measures 13 feet high and 11 feet at its widest point. After the Nov. 2000 launch, the satellite will be deployed to its full measurement of 132.5 feet in length and 29.5 feet in width. Anik F1 is the ninth satellite to be built for Telesat Canada, and the first Boeing 702 model in the fleet. Anik F1 will provide 15 times the power and four times the capacity of Telesat's first-generation models. It will provide general telecommunications services for North and South America from Telesat's operating slot of 107.3 degrees West longitude.
